BIF-IGS Annual Retreat, 18.-20.06.2024

Introduction

The 2024 Annual Retreat for the BioInterfaces International Graduate School (BIF-IGS) was held from June 18th to 20th in the picturesque town of Rastatt, Germany, hosted at Bil­dungs­haus St. Bernhardt. This retreat continued the tradition of fostering scientific exchange, col­la­boration, and skill development among the graduate school’s community. Attended by stu­dents, principal investigators, and special guests, the retreat provided a vibrant platform to present research, discuss ideas, and strengthen connections within the BIF-IGS network.

This year’s retreat included poster presentations, scientific talks, and engaging social ac­ti­vities, such as a BBQ and team-building games. Special recognition was given to out­stan­ding student contributions through poster and talk awards.

 

Highlights and Key Activities

  1. Scientific Presentations:
    • Poster Sessions: Researchers showcased their work in three dedicated sessions. Each presentation was followed by in-depth discussions and feedback from peers and prin­ci­pal investigators.
    • Talk Sessions: A total of 13 student talks highlighted diverse research topics, allowing participants to refine their presentation skills and engage in insightful discussions.
  2. Guest Speakers
    The retreat welcomed two distinguished external speakers from industry:
    • Dr. Lars Bremer (Agilent) presented on “Science for Science”, connecting academic research to product development.
    • Dr. Jan Blankenburg (Evonik) explored the transition from basic research to innovation in “From Academic Research to Strategic Innovation and New Business Development.”

    The retreat concluded with recognition of exceptional contributions:

    The retreat’s success was made possible by the dedicated efforts of the organizing team: Mona Wellhäusser, Jasmin Böhm, Marta Velaz Martin, and Camilla Stolle. Their me­ti­culous planning ensured smooth execution of the program and a welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.
  5. Program Overview

    The retreat followed a well-structured schedule:

  • Day 1 (June 18): Arrival in Rastatt, participant introductions, and the first round of talks and posters, culminating in a BBQ and team-building activities.
  • Day 2 (June 19): Focused on scientific sessions, including talks, poster presentations, and a special pub quiz in the evening.
  • Day 3 (June 20): Featured the final talk and poster sessions, followed by guest speaker presentations and the award ceremony.

The comprehensive program offered ample opportunities for learning, networking, and re­la­xation.

 

Outcomes and Feedback

The 2024 retreat successfully met its goals of facilitating academic exchange and community building. Participants appreciated the diversity of research topics and the constructive feed­back provided during sessions. The guest speakers’ insights inspired students to consider ca­reer paths in academia and industry alike.

Additionally, the retreat strengthened the bonds within the BIF-IGS community, with many at­tendees praising the inclusive and supportive environment.
